10 June 2022 - The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to San Marino, with residence in Rome, Mr. Yiorgos Christofides, presented his Credentials



The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to San Marino, with residence in Rome, Mr. Yiorgos Christofides, presented, on 9th June 2022, his Credentials to the two Captains Regent of the Republic of San Marino, H.E. Mr. Oscar Mina and H.E. Mr. Paolo Rondelli, during a special ceremony that took place at Palazzo Pubblico, official seat of the Captains Regent of San Marino.

Addressing the Ambassador, during the ceremony of the presentation of Credentials, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of San Marino, Mr. Luca Beccari, recalled the excellent bilateral relations between Cyprus and San Marino underlining that the sentiment of affinity between the two countries is based on the values and principles that they share, of full respect for human rights and defending freedom and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He added, among others, that the respect that San Marino pays to these values and principles is historically reflected in the position the country takes in the International Organisations it participates, with particular emphasis on the Council of Europe, while this respect is even more important today in view of the new threats to European stability.

On his part, and presenting his Credentials, the Ambassador Mr. Christofides conveyed, at the outset, to the Captains Regent, the cordial greetings and wishes of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, for progress and prosperity for the country and people of San Marino. During his speech, the Ambassador underlined the historical friendly bonds between Cyprus and San Marino, based on their common adherence to international law and to the full respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, irrespective of their size. He expressed the gratitude of the Government for the long standing support by San Marino to the efforts of our side for finding a just, viable and functional settlement to the Cyprus Problem that will ensure the respect of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots. He, further, thanked warmly for the support and solidarity that San Marino exemplifies towards Cyprus, especially in the context of the Council of Europe and the United Nations. Furthermore and referring to the latest developments concerning the Cyprus Problem, he informed about Turkey’s illegal actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone and the territory of Cyprus, with emphasis on the provocative acts of Turkey in the fenced area of Varosha. He also reassured of Cyprus’ intention to provide any possible support and assistance to San Marino, in the context of the process for the deepening of its relations with the EU.
