In the context of a broader policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish a more frequent and closer cooperation with academic centers in Cyprus, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed this morning between the Ministry and Frederick University. The Memorandum, which entered into force immediately for an initial period of 3 years, was signed in a special ceremony at the University premises by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Nikos Christodoulides and the Rector Prof. George Demosthenous.

The purpose of this Memorandum is the establishment and development of cooperation which will be based on regular communication between the Parties in areas falling within the competence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and more specifically in the Law of the Sea, international aspects of Shipping, branding and communication, as well as in other areas of mutual interest. On a practical level, the Memorandum provides for training programs for the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conferences and lectures and research on relevant subjects, and support for Foreign Ministry work by Frederick University academic staff and/or students.

In a statement made after the signing ceremony, Mr. Christodoulides welcomed the Memorandum as it enables the Ministry to draw on the expertise of the academic community of Frederick University to address effectively the multiple challenges that the Republic of Cyprus is currently faced with.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has signed six more agreements of this kind with academic institutions to date.
